PERTH AMBOY, NJ—Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Lawrence Cattano of the Perth Amboy Police Department have announced the arrest of Luis Alberto Serrano Diaz, 24, of Perth Amboy, in connection with a fatal stabbing. The incident occurred on Saturday evening near the intersection of Smith Street and Maple Street. Authorities found Jason Torres, 32, also from Perth Amboy, with multiple stab wounds. He later died at Hackensack Meridian Health Raritan Bay Medical Center.

The investigation, spearheaded by Detective Jose Santiago of the Perth Amboy Police and Detective Michelle Coppola of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, revealed the attack was not random; Diaz knew Torres. Diaz has been charged with first-degree murder, fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He is currently detained at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center awaiting a pre-trial detention hearing.

Authorities are seeking additional information and encourage anyone with surveillance footage of the area to contact Detective Santiago at 732-324-3800 or Detective Coppola at 732-745-3477. Despite the charges, it is emphasized that Diaz is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
