Utah police AI report tool claims officer turned into frog after bodycam mix-up
HEBER CITY, Utah – A new artificial intelligence tool being tested by the Heber City Police Department to draft reports from body camera footage produced a bizarre — and unintentionally hilarious — error, when it recorded that an officer had “turned into a frog.”
According to Fox 13 in Salt Lake City, the department had been piloting an AI-driven program called Draft One, designed to automatically generate police reports from bodycam audio and video. The software misinterpreted background noise from a Disney movie playing nearby — The Princess and the Frog — and incorporated it into the official report.
“The body cam software and the AI report writing software picked up on the movie that was playing in the background,” said Sergeant Rick Keel, explaining how the mix-up occurred. “That’s when we learned the importance of correcting these AI-generated reports.”
The department has been experimenting with the software to reduce the time officers spend on paperwork, a process that typically requires several hours per week. However, early results have been inconsistent. A demonstration of a simple mock traffic stop also required extensive corrections after the AI-generated narrative included inaccuracies.

Despite the errors, Sgt. Keel said the technology has proven useful in speeding up administrative work. “I’m not the most tech-savvy person, so it’s very user-friendly,” he told Fox 13, adding that it saves him “six to eight hours weekly.”
The Heber City Police Department continues to test Draft One but says officers are now required to thoroughly review every AI-generated report before submission — to ensure no fairy tale elements make it into official records.
