School bus slams into tree in Howell leaving driver seriously hurt

A school bus crashed into a tree in Howell Township Tuesday morning, sending the driver to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.

HOWELL, N.J. — A school bus driver suffered serious injuries after a school bus veered off the road and crashed into a tree in Howell Township on Tuesday morning, according to police.

The crash happened at about 10:08 a.m. in the area of 909 Route 547, also known as Lakewood-Farmingdale Road, the Howell Township Police Department said in a press release.

Investigators said a 2024 International IC school bus operated by a 52-year-old Elberon resident struck a tree.

No passengers were on the bus at the time of the collision.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the bus, suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Police did not release the driver’s identity or provide an update on the person’s condition.

Assisting at the scene were the Howell Township First Aid & Rescue Squad No. 1, Ramtown Fire Company, Hatzolah First Aid and Robert Wood Johnson paramedics.

The crash remains under investigation by the Howell Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
