Scratch-off gift turns into $100K payoff for Maryland man

Silver Spring man lands $100K lottery win after relative returns a favor

Silver Spring, MD – A simple act of kindness turned into a six-figure payday for a Silver Spring truck driver who received a scratch-off ticket as a thank-you gift—and ended up winning a $100,000 top prize.

The unexpected windfall came from a $10 Double Your Money scratch-off purchased at the Exxon station at 12245 Veirs Mill Road in Silver Spring. The winning ticket wasn’t even bought by the player himself—it was a gift from a family member whom he had helped weeks earlier.

The winner, who claimed the prize on Thursday at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, said the moment unfolded over a phone call while his relative stopped for gas and decided to repay the favor with a ticket. He asked him to scratch it on the spot while they remained on the line.

At first, the family member thought the prize was $100. But after taking a closer look, he realized he had missed three zeros—the ticket was actually worth $100,000.

The Double Your Money game, which launched in July, offers a total of 14 top prizes of $100,000. With this claim, seven top prizes still remain, along with three third-tier prizes worth $10,000.

The retailer, Exxon on Veirs Mill Road, will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
