Seneca park zoo celebrates birth of second giraffe calf named pippi

ROCHESTER, NY – The Seneca Park Zoo has welcomed a new giraffe calf, a female named Pippi, born on December 13. Pippi, named for her playful and distinctive ossicones resembling the pigtails of Pippi Longstocking, is the second giraffe calf born at the zoo within a week.

This unique event follows the birth of a male calf, Parker Jr. (PJ), born to another giraffe, Kipenzi. Both Pippi and PJ share the same father, Parker, a giraffe who unfortunately passed away in February 2023.

Zoo officials reported that Pippi’s mother, Iggy, along with Kipenzi and their calves, are in good health and currently residing in a private, behind-the-scenes area of the zoo. The consecutive births of these giraffe calves are not only a joyous occasion for the Seneca Park Zoo but also contribute significantly to the conservation and understanding of these majestic animals.
