SOUTH RIVER, NJ — South River Police are investigating an incident involving high school students who broke into South River High School and defaced school property outside of school hours on Thursday.
The incident stemmed from a senior prank that went horribly wrong and damaging. The school was littered with toilet paper, furniture and desks were taped together,
According to the South River Police Department, officers responded to reports of unauthorized entry and property damage at the school. A large group of students was found to have entered the premises and deliberately caused damage.
The case is being handled as criminal trespassing and vandalism. Police confirmed that the involved students have been identified and are facing disciplinary measures from school authorities.
Law enforcement officials are also working with the students’ families to determine additional consequences.
“Criminal trespassing and vandalism are serious offenses that threaten the safety and integrity of not only our schools, but our community as well,” said Chief Mark E. Tinitigan of the South River Police Department. “We take these incidents very seriously and will continue to work closely with schools to promote a safe environment for students, staff, and residents.”
The South River Police Department urged the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to help prevent similar incidents. Authorities emphasized the importance of respecting property and understanding the legal implications of such actions.
“Nothing was broken. Nothing was stolen. But tables were moved, desks were moved out of classrooms, equipment was moved out of the gym,” South River Mayor Peter Guindi said. “
The police department is coordinating efforts with the South River School Administration and Board of Education to prevent future occurrences and maintain safety within school grounds.
