Utica, NY — A fight inside a North Utica Walmart escalated into a dangerous confrontation Sunday when a woman armed herself with store knives, forcing police to draw their weapons before multiple suspects were arrested. The incident began around 12:35 p.m. Sunday and stretched from the back of the store to the checkout area, according to the Utica Police Department.
Officers arriving at the scene found several people arguing and identified one woman holding a large knife. Police issued commands at gunpoint for her to drop the weapon, but nearby individuals intervened and removed it. Officers then realized she was holding a second knife in her other hand, which was also taken before she was placed in custody.
Fight spread across store before escalating
Investigators say the altercation started when one individual approached others near the rear of the store and initiated an argument. The dispute quickly turned physical and moved through much of the store before reaching the front checkout area.
Police later determined the knives used were taken from store shelves and removed from packaging during the fight, escalating the confrontation as it unfolded.
Officers detained multiple individuals involved, but the situation did not end inside the store.
