What’s happening in Howell? Large police presence reported, two arrested including man holding baby

June 5, 2025

HOWELL, N.J. — A major law enforcement operation unfolded Thursday morning in Howell Township, resulting in two arrests, including a man seen holding a baby, according to officials.

Authorities from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau, Monmouth County Emergency Response Team, and Howell Township Police conducted simultaneous investigations in two separate areas—Southport Drive near Chestnut Hill Road in the Candlewood section, and White Street. Officials confirmed the incidents appear to be related.

No details have yet been released about the nature of the investigation or the identities of those taken into custody. However, the sighting of one suspect holding an infant during the arrest drew public attention as law enforcement swarmed the residential neighborhood.

“There is no threat to public safety,” Howell Township Police and Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago said in a joint advisory. Authorities asked residents and motorists to avoid both active scenes as the investigation continues.

Law enforcement has not disclosed what prompted the operation or what charges, if any, the two individuals face.

Officials urge cooperation as inquiry continues

Police are expected to provide further information as the situation develops. Howell Township Police have stated updates will be issued via official social media channels.

As of Thursday afternoon, both locations remained under active investigation, though no lockdowns or shelter-in-place orders were issued for the surrounding community.
