Youth sailors set to race in Wildwoods back bays for summer regatta

June 11, 2025

WILDWOOD CREST, NJ — Youth sailors from across southern and coastal New Jersey will compete June 26 in the Mid-Atlantic Yacht Racing Association’s South Jersey Summer Series Regatta at Sunset Lake in Wildwood Crest.

The event, hosted by the Greater Wildwood Yacht Club, will feature more than 100 young sailors between the ages of 9 and 18. Races are scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with spectators invited to watch from the park along Sunset Lake.

“The community is invited to come out and watch the competition which will be visible from the park along Sunset Lake,” event organizers stated.

The Mid-Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (MAYRA), a nonprofit organization, coordinates this regatta as part of its mission to promote and advance the sport of sailing in South Jersey and the surrounding region. The organization works to foster communication within the sailing community, provide educational opportunities, and help young sailors improve their racing and seamanship skills.

PART OF A REGIONAL SUMMER SERIES

The South Jersey Summer Series Regatta is one of several regional competitions organized by MAYRA during the summer season. These regattas allow youth sailors to test their skills against peers while building experience on the water.

Competitors will navigate courses laid out on Sunset Lake’s back bays, contending with local wind and current conditions that are characteristic of the area’s coastal waterways.

The Greater Wildwood Yacht Club has hosted numerous sailing events and offers facilities that accommodate both participants and spectators for community sailing competitions.

This regatta is expected to bring an influx of families and visitors to the Wildwoods, supporting local tourism and hospitality businesses during the summer season.

Over 100 youth sailors will take to Sunset Lake later this month for the Wildwoods’ major summer sailing competition.
