MIDDLETOWN, NY – Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced yesterday the arrest of 21-year-old convicted sexual offender Cameron McEwen in Middletown, New York. McEwen is accused of persuading a 16-year-old girl living in Alaska to engage in sexually explicit activity, take photos and videos of herself, and transmit them to him via Snapchat. McEwen allegedly threatened to hack the victim’s cell phone and Snapchat account if she did not comply with his demands.

He was presented before U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul E. Davison in White Plains federal court and detained without bail.

At the time of the alleged offenses, McEwen was on New York State probation following a previous conviction for rape in the second degree.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams emphasized the urgent need for law enforcement to continue efforts to protect children from predators, stating that his office is committed to safeguarding children from these threats.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities request anyone with information concerning Cameron McEwen or encounters with the specified Snapchat user names to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI and reference the case.
