ORANGE COUNTY, NY – Tobin Zahangir, a 27-year-old Hopewell Junction resident, was convicted of driving while intoxicated and failure to obey a traffic control device, following a two-day jury trial in the Newburgh City Court on Friday. Zahangir is scheduled to be sentenced on September 25.
The charges date back to the early morning hours of May 4, 2019, when New York State Police arrested Zahangir after observing him disobey a red traffic light while driving on Broadway in the City of Newburgh.
Zahangir showed signs of intoxication and failed a series of roadside sobriety tests. Subsequent chemical tests indicated that his blood alcohol content was over the legal limit at 0.09%.
Zahangir had been previously convicted on the same charges after a 2019 jury trial, but the conviction was overturned by the Appellate Term of the Supreme Court, which ordered a new trial.
District Attorney David M. Hoovler thanked the New York State Police for their investigation and arrest of Zahangir, underscoring the commitment of his office to prosecuting intoxicated and impaired driving cases.
