Rev. Al Sharpton to Deliver Eulogy for New Jersey Lt. Governor Shelia Oliver

NEWARK, NJ – The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark will be the setting for a solemn ceremony on Saturday, August 12th, at 10 a.m., as Rev. Al Sharpton, President and Founder of the National Action Network (NAN), delivers the eulogy for the late New Jersey Lt. Governor Shelia Oliver.

The service comes at the request of Lt. Governor Oliver’s family, as they bid farewell to a trailblazing leader whose career in public service spanned decades and left a lasting impact on the Garden State.

Lt. Governor Oliver was a pioneer, achieving significant milestones throughout her illustrious career. She made history as the first Black woman to serve as Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly and was the first Black woman to hold statewide elected office in the state. Additionally, she became only the second Black woman in U.S. history to lead a state legislative chamber.

Her unexpected passing has evoked an outpouring of condolences from individuals across the political spectrum, all acknowledging her dedication and commitment to advancing the needs and values of her community.

Rev. Al Sharpton, a longtime ally and friend, expressed his admiration for Lt. Governor Oliver’s relentless advocacy for empowering Black women in positions of power.

He highlighted her work with Emerge America, where she championed the cause of ensuring more women, especially Black women, have opportunities to serve in elected office. Rev. Sharpton emphasized that Lt. Governor Oliver’s legacy extends beyond her own accomplishments; she paved the way for future generations, inspiring others to follow in her footsteps.
