Elderly Brooklyn Man Killed in Apartment Fire, Police Suspect Arson

BROOKLYN, NY – A tragic fire erupted late Friday night in a Brooklyn apartment, leading to one fatality and another person hospitalized.

Police and FDNY units responded to a 911 call reporting smoke at 371 Monroe Street in the 79th Precinct around 11:15 PM. Firefighters extinguished the fire shortly after their arrival. Inside, a 70-year-old man was found unconscious and unresponsive in a bedroom. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

A 65-year-old woman also affected by the fire was transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Woodhull for treatment of smoke inhalation and is currently in stable condition.

Authorities have a suspicion that the fire was intentionally set. One person of interest has been taken into custody as the investigation continues. The identity of the deceased has not been released, pending family notification.
