WWII Vets Share Stories With Public As Wall Township Honors America's Veterans

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Three World War II veterans, each nearly a century old, were honored with a warm reception in Wall Township on Monday before sharing their stories with local elementary students. Veterans Fred Nungesser, 99, of the 84th Infantry Division, John Wardell, 99, of the 2nd Ranger Battalion, and Matt Yacovino, 100, a former U.S. Navy PBY crewman, visited the Wall Police WWII Rockefeller Memorial and then met with 4th and 5th-grade students at Allenwood Elementary School.

After a tribute at the memorial, the veterans were escorted to the school, where they captivated students with stories of their service during the war and their recent journey back to Europe with the Best Defense Foundation, an organization dedicated to honoring veterans by facilitating return visits to historic battle sites.

“These heroes spoke about their service, their recent journey back to Europe, and the importance of honoring our past to inspire our future,” Wall Township Police shared on social media. The veterans recounted their experiences in uniform and discussed the lessons they learned, emphasizing the value of resilience, courage, and remembrance.

The students posed thoughtful questions, gaining insight into a pivotal time in history directly from those who lived through it.
