BOSTON — A 17-year-old male was arrested Wednesday evening in Mattapan after police officers discovered a loaded firearm with a large-capacity magazine discarded under a vehicle, the Boston Police Department announced.

At approximately 9:40 p.m. on December 4, officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) observed two individuals walking in the middle of Stratton Street. When officers exited their cruiser to speak with the pair, the individuals quickened their pace in an apparent attempt to avoid contact.

Officers stopped the two males for questioning but released them after a brief inquiry. Upon further investigation, detectives reviewing surveillance footage observed one of the individuals placing an unknown object behind a vehicle as officers approached.

A subsequent search of the area uncovered a discarded Springfield Armory firearm loaded with 18 rounds in the magazine and one round in the chamber. Officers tracked down the suspects nearby on Harvard Street and arrested the 17-year-old.

The juvenile is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of a large-capacity feeding device, and carrying a loaded firearm in public. He is set to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
