Camper fire in Maryland leaves owner injured and causes $14,000 in damages

OAKLAND, MD — A fire engulfed a 1991 Terry 32-foot camper on Thursday afternoon, leaving its owner with minor injuries and causing an estimated $14,000 in damages, officials said.

The incident occurred at 12:27 p.m. on the property at 190 Old Crellin Road, according to investigators. The fire originated underneath the camper at the electric supply and has been ruled accidental, caused by an electrical malfunction.

The camper’s owner, Daniel Lewis, discovered the fire and sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries while attempting to push a nearby vehicle away from the flames, officials said. He was treated at the scene.

The Oakland Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire with 20 firefighters. Crews brought the blaze under control within 15 minutes, but not before it destroyed the camper and its contents, valued at $8,000, and caused an additional $6,000 in collateral damage.

Neither smoke alarms nor a fire suppression system were present in the camper, according to the report.
