D.C. police offer $60,000 reward for suspect in deadly shooting

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A citywide search is underway for 27-year-old Tyrell Lamonte Bailey, who is wanted in connection with a fatal weapons offense that claimed the life of an officer. In a coordinated effort, the FBI, ATF, U.S. Marshals Service, and local law enforcement have raised the reward to $60,000 for information leading to Bailey’s arrest and conviction.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday, August 28, at approximately 5:40 p.m., when officers from the Robbery Suppression Unit noticed a man, later identified as Bailey, exiting a suspicious vehicle in the 4500 block of Quarles Street, Northeast. When officers attempted to make contact, Bailey fled, heading toward I-295 southbound and jumping from a retaining wall. He was then seen placing a firearm into a storm drain before escaping on the back of a motorcycle. The motorcycle’s operator has since been identified and located.

Tragically, as officers worked to recover the firearm from the storm drain, the weapon discharged, fatally wounding one officer. Despite rapid medical intervention and transport by helicopter to a hospital, the officer could not be saved.

Bailey is described as 5’6” and around 180 pounds, with tattoos covering both arms. He is currently wanted on a DC Superior Court arrest warrant for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
