Two DC boys gunned down in Kenilworth Avenue ambush as $50,000 reward offered

Washington, DC — A mid-afternoon shooting along Kenilworth Avenue turned deadly for two young boys, as investigators work to track down those responsible in a case now classified as a double homicide.

The gunfire erupted at approximately 3:27 p.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of Kenilworth Avenue NE, where responding officers found two juvenile males suffering from gunshot wounds.

Despite lifesaving efforts by DC Fire and EMS, 14-year-old Tyale Coates was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, 12-year-old Mhilo Young, was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

Both victims were identified as residents of Northeast DC.

The investigation is being handled by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Case Squad, which continues to gather evidence and interview potential witnesses connected to the shooting.

No suspects have been announced, and officials have not released details regarding a possible motive.

The Metropolitan Police Department said it is offering up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in each homicide, bringing the total reward in this case to $50,000.
