Police say a man accused of killing a 35-year-old victim in Northeast DC was captured in North Carolina before being returned to face a murder charge.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man accused of killing a Northeast DC resident has been extradited from North Carolina and charged with first-degree murder, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
The investigation began on May 24 when officers responded at approximately 4:33 p.m. to the 3300 block of East Capitol Street, Northeast, for a report of an unconscious person.
Officers found 35-year-old Dalonte Lamont Jackson unconscious, breathing and suffering from severe injuries. DC Fire and EMS transported him to a local hospital, where he died on May 29 despite lifesaving efforts.
An autopsy performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined Jackson died from multiple blunt force injuries. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Detectives determined the fatal assault occurred at a residence in the 3600 block of Jay Street, Northeast.
According to police, 35-year-old Maurice Pierre Hawley, of Northwest DC, was arrested June 16 by local authorities in Jackson, North Carolina, on a DC Superior Court arrest warrant.
After completing the extradition process, Hawley was returned to Washington on June 30, when he was formally charged with first-degree murder.
The Metropolitan Police Department credited the United States Marshals Service and the North Carolina Marshal Fugitive Task Force with assisting in locating and arresting Hawley.
The charge is an allegation, and Hawley is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
