Animal welfare officials seek public help as severely malnourished dog begins recovery
Marlboro, NJ – A severely malnourished dog found abandoned on the side of a road in Marlboro is now fighting for survival as authorities investigate who may be responsible for the apparent neglect.
The Monmouth County SPCA said the dog, named “Firefox,” was discovered less than 48 hours before the agency’s public appeal, left inside a crate and unable to walk. Weighing just three pounds, the animal was described as having a body condition score of 1—the lowest possible rating before death.
Rescuers said the dog was suffering from extreme starvation and trauma when found.

In a statement, the Monmouth County SPCA said, “We found Firefox less than 48 hours ago – he was abandoned on the side of the road in Marlboro, left in a crate and unable to walk.” The organization added, “At just 3 lbs, this frail baby has a Body Condition Score of 1 – the lowest possible rating before death.”

The SPCA said Firefox has already survived his first night in emergency care but faces a prolonged recovery. “With a body score of 1 and blood sugar levels 4x the normal limit from pure trauma, his recovery will be long and costly,” the organization said.
The dog is currently receiving round-the-clock monitoring, with plans for physical therapy, specialized feeding, and continued medical treatment.

Law enforcement is working alongside animal welfare officials to determine who abandoned the dog. The SPCA is urging anyone who may recognize Firefox or know his origin to come forward.
