Axe bandit busted after smashing into DC businesses

Two break ins one suspect and an axe lead to charges

Washington, DC — A suspect accused of using an axe to break into multiple Northwest businesses and steal cash registers and money has been arrested following an investigation by specialized police units.

An 18-year-old male from Northwest Washington was taken into custody Wednesday by members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Carjacking Task Force and Criminal Apprehension Unit.

Investigators allege the suspect, who was a juvenile at the time of the incidents, carried out two early morning burglaries on March 3.

In the first incident, at approximately 5:14 a.m., the suspect approached a restaurant in the 1000 block of 5th Street Northwest and shattered the front glass door with an axe. He then entered the business along with two additional suspects and removed a cash register before fleeing in a vehicle.

Roughly an hour later, at approximately 6:45 a.m., the same suspect allegedly targeted another restaurant in the 300 block of Massachusetts Avenue Northwest. Authorities said he again used an axe to break the front door, entered the establishment, and stole cash before fleeing.

The suspect has been charged with two counts of second-degree burglary of an establishment.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to determine whether the suspect is connected to additional crimes.
