Charles County coworkers win $150K chasing Powerball jackpot

Charles County coworkers land $150K Powerball prize after jackpot chase

Marbury, MD – A pair of coworkers turned a shared dream of chasing the $1.7 billion Powerball jackpot into a six-figure reality, scoring a $150,010 prize after hitting big with a boosted ticket bought just days before the drawing.

The Charles County duo, who only play when lottery jackpots hit headline-making heights, purchased their winning Powerball ticket at Gray’s Market on Chicamuxen Road in Marbury ahead of the Sept. 9 drawing. Though they missed the billion-dollar jackpot by one number, their $20 ticket still delivered a hefty payout, thanks in part to the game’s multiplier feature.

The coworkers claimed their prize Thursday at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. They recounted how their routine of reviewing tickets over coffee quickly turned into a celebration.

One member of the team said they initially believed they had won $50,000 — the prize for matching four white balls and the Powerball — but they had opted to spend an extra $2 for the Power Play multiplier. With the 3X multiplier drawn, their prize tripled to $150,000. An additional match added $10 to their total win.

While they haven’t made concrete plans for the money, both said the unexpected windfall gives them some breathing room financially.

The prize-winning ticket was one of several purchased during their jackpot hunt and marks a rare Powerball win in the Marbury area. The store that sold the ticket, Gray’s Market, is a small local retailer that has now joined the list of lucky Maryland Lottery locations.
