Coffee stop gamble lands $1M jackpot for Ohio man

Morning coffee run turns into $1M jackpot win for Ohio man

Ashville, OH — A routine stop for coffee on the way to work turned into a $1,000,000 lottery win after an Ohio man switched tickets at the last minute and struck the top prize.

The Ashville resident had been searching for a different scratch-off game but was unable to find it at several stores. While stopping at a GetGo on West 3rd Avenue in Columbus, he opted instead to purchase a $1,000,000 Cashword ticket.

He scratched the ticket in his truck while drinking coffee and initially believed he had won $10,000 after counting 12 words. A coworker reviewed the ticket and counted 14 words, confirming the top prize.

The pair verified the result multiple times before scanning the ticket, which confirmed the $1,000,000 prize paid as $40,000 per year for 25 years.

The winner chose the cash option of $500,000 and will receive $366,250 after taxes.

He said he plans to pay off his house and car and take a vacation with his wife.

Lottery officials said the $20 scratch-off game still has multiple top prizes remaining.
