Grocery run turns into jackpot moment at Maryland Walmart

Grocery trip turns into $500K shock for Annapolis couple at Severn Walmart

SEVERN, MD – A routine grocery run turned into a half-million-dollar moment when an Annapolis man scratched off a winning lottery ticket in the parking lot of a Severn Walmart.

The Anne Arundel County couple said they decided to buy tickets after recalling that the same store had recently sold a $1 million-winning scratch-off. While shopping at the Walmart on George Clauss Boulevard, they stopped at a lottery vending machine and each purchased a $20 ticket.

The man selected a Gifts of Green scratch-off, a choice he later said stood out immediately. After returning to their car, the couple scratched their tickets and quickly realized one of them carried a $500,000 prize.

According to the couple, the moment left both of them frozen as they checked and rechecked the ticket before driving home. They later visited Maryland Lottery headquarters on April 10 to claim the prize.

The Gifts of Green game launched in October with seven top prizes of $500,000. Lottery officials said five of those top prizes remain unclaimed, along with four second-tier prizes of $25,000.

The Walmart location that sold the winning ticket will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.

The winners, who described themselves as regular lottery players, said the store’s recent history of selling a major prize influenced their decision to buy tickets there that day.
