Maryland man pockets $50K after jackpot ticket nearly hits

Montgomery County man wins $50K Powerball prize after chasing $1.4B jackpot

Germantown, MD – A Montgomery County resident who rarely plays the lottery walked away with a $50,000 Powerball prize after purchasing a ticket for the massive $1.4 billion jackpot drawing held on Sept. 3.

The man, an educator who typically only plays once a month or when the jackpot swells, decided to try his luck when he saw the record-setting prize making headlines. He picked up a few tickets at the Germantown Shoppers located at 18066 Mateny Road—and ended up landing a third-tier prize.

The winning numbers drawn were 3, 16, 29, 61, 69, and the Powerball of 9. The Montgomery County man matched four of the five white balls and the red Powerball, missing only the number 69—his ticket had 29 instead. That combination was good enough for a $50,000 prize.

He became aware of his win after seeing a Maryland Lottery post online that listed four $50,000 winners from the Sept. 3 drawing. Upon checking his tickets, he confirmed he was one of them.

The winner, who lives in the northwest section of Montgomery County, claimed the prize and told officials he plans to invest the money.

In addition to his ticket, Maryland also had three other $50,000 third-tier winners for the same drawing—sold in Dundalk, Laurel, and Temple Hills—all of which remained unclaimed as of Tuesday. A $1 million second-tier winning ticket was also sold in Pikesville and had not been claimed as of Sept. 9.

Players have 182 days from the drawing date to claim their prizes in Maryland.
