TRENTON, N.J. – Acting Governor Tahesha Way declared a State of Emergency in Ocean County on Wednesday morning as the Jones Road Wildfire continued to burn out of control, scorching thousands of acres and prompting mass evacuations across parts of the Jersey Shore region.

Executive Order No. 387 went into effect at 7:00 a.m., granting the state increased powers to respond to the rapidly spreading fire in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area. The fire, first reported Tuesday, has grown to an estimated 8,500 acres and threatens more than 1,000 structures across Ocean, Lacey, and Barnegat Townships.

“Due to its accelerated growth, with an estimated burn of 8,500 acres, threatening more than 1,000 structures, requiring the evacuation of residents in the area, and the loss of power to over 25,000 residents, I am declaring a State of Emergency for Ocean County,” said Acting Governor Way.

Local and state fire crews are working with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service to contain the blaze. Officials have not confirmed any injuries as of Wednesday morning, but multiple neighborhoods have been placed under mandatory evacuation orders. Power outages affecting more than 25,000 residents were reported overnight.

The source of the wildfire remains under investigation, with authorities urging residents to avoid the affected zones and follow guidance from emergency officials. Utility crews are working to restore service in the areas impacted by the fire and smoke.

Acting Governor Way urged residents to remain vigilant and monitor official sources for safety instructions. “I encourage all residents in the County to continue to monitor the proper channels, and to use caution and follow all safety protocols,” she said.
