NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — A Rutgers University student has been charged in connection with multiple invasion of privacy incidents on the university’s New Brunswick campus, authorities announced Monday. The alleged incidents occurred over a span of several weeks in October, with reports of students being recorded without consent in campus bathrooms.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Rutgers Police Department stated that on October 2, a female student reported being filmed while in a bathroom, prompting an investigation by Rutgers police. Following the initial report, additional complaints surfaced about similar incidents occurring in nearby dormitory facilities.

The investigation, led by Sergeant Robert Calvert of the Rutgers Police Department and Detective Haley Hlavka of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, identified Michael Williams, 18, of Philadelphia, as a suspect. According to the authorities, Williams allegedly used his cellphone to record multiple students while they were in the shower.

Williams was arrested on October 25 without incident. He faces three counts of third-degree invasion of privacy and one count of fourth-degree tampering with evidence. Currently, he is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending a pre-trial detention hearing.

The investigation remains active, and authorities have urged anyone with additional information to contact Detective Haley Hlavka at the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office or Sergeant Robert Calvert at the Rutgers Police Department.
