Powerball dreams pay off with $150K score in Charles County

Charles County coworkers miss jackpot by one number but still land $150K Powerball win

Marbury, MD – Two coworkers who only play the lottery when the jackpot makes national headlines are now celebrating a six-figure prize, after narrowly missing the $1.7 billion Powerball jackpot — but still winning $150,010 on a single ticket purchased in Charles County.

The pair, who work together in Charles County, bought their winning ticket at Gray’s Market on Chicamuxen Road in Marbury ahead of the September 9 drawing. They had joined the wave of “jackpot chasers” drawn in by the near-record Powerball prize, and it paid off — just not in the way they expected.

The team revealed Thursday at Maryland Lottery headquarters that they were reviewing their tickets the morning after the drawing when they matched enough numbers to trigger a $50,000 prize. But there was more. One of them had remembered opting in for the Power Play multiplier — doubling down with an extra $2 — and checked the results again.

The 3X multiplier boosted their $50,000 to $150,000 instantly. Another $10 in winnings from additional matches brought the total prize to $150,010.

Though they didn’t win the jackpot, the coworkers said the windfall was still a welcome shock. Neither has immediate plans for the money, but both expressed a sense of financial relief knowing they now have some breathing room.

The winning ticket was purchased on a $20 Powerball play, part of a batch the pair bought at several locations throughout the county. Their story echoes that of countless Americans who dream big during massive jackpot rolls — but in this case, the dream landed them a substantial win just one number shy of the top prize.
