ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The Atlantic City Police Department has charged Ricardo Berrios, 37, of Camden, NJ, in connection with a shooting that occurred on July 5. Berrios, already in custody on drug charges, was identified as the suspect in the incident that left a 53-year-old man from Atlantic City with non-life-threatening injuries.
On July 5, at 12:53 AM, patrol officers responded to the first block of South Florida Avenue, where they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division.
Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit identified Berrios as the suspect. Berrios, who had multiple active warrants, was found occupying a motel room in the 3600 block of Pacific Avenue. Detectives from the Special Investigations Section initiated surveillance and arrested Berrios, along with Jacqueline Kane and Jason Ekkers, without incident as they left the motel room. Kane and Ekkers also had active warrants.
Upon arrest, Berrios was found with nearly 37 grams of cocaine and 73 bags of heroin. Ekkers had small amounts of heroin and cocaine.
Berrios has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain person not to possess a weapon, tampering with evidence, multiple counts of possession of CDS (Controlled Dangerous Substances), possession with intent to distribute, possession within 500 feet of a public zone, money laundering, and possession of CDS paraphernalia. He was provided with these charges while being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Jason Ekkers, 32, of Atlantic City, has been charged with possession of CDS and possession of CDS paraphernalia. Jacqueline Kane, 28, of Hammonton, NJ, has been charged with contempt of court. All three individuals were remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
