Suspended Delaware Driver Wanted on DUI, Vehicular Assault Charges After Three-Crash Rampage in Seaford

State police say a Georgetown man allegedly drove impaired, fled multiple crash scenes, and seriously injured a 20-year-old driver in a head-on collision.

SEAFORD, Del. — Delaware State Police have obtained an arrest warrant for a Georgetown man accused of causing a series of hit-and-run crashes while allegedly driving under the influence, culminating in a head-on collision that seriously injured another driver.

Authorities identified the suspect as 36-year-old Angel Morales-Ortiz of Georgetown. He faces vehicular assault, DUI, and related charges stemming from a string of crashes that occurred Friday evening in Seaford.

According to investigators, troopers responded at approximately 7:30 p.m. June 19 to the area of Old Furnace Road and Middleford Road for a reported hit-and-run collision.

Multiple crashes unfold within minutes

The preliminary investigation found that Morales-Ortiz was driving a Jeep Comanche northbound on Middleford Road when he attempted to turn onto Old Furnace Road.

As the Jeep turned onto eastbound Old Furnace Road, it crossed into the westbound lane and sideswiped a Ford F-150 that was stopped at the intersection, police said.

Investigators allege Morales-Ortiz then fled the scene and continued eastbound at a high rate of speed while committing multiple traffic violations.

A short distance later, the Jeep allegedly backed into the front of a Toyota Camry near the intersection of Coverdale Road. Troopers said Morales-Ortiz then maneuvered around stopped traffic and continued driving eastbound.

Head-on collision leaves driver seriously hurt

The incident escalated further when the Jeep approached Cokesbury Road.

According to state police, the Jeep crossed into the westbound lane and crashed head-on into a Ford Fusion.

The driver of the Ford Fusion, a 20-year-old Seaford man, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Toyota Camry, a 25-year-old woman from Bishopville, Maryland, and her passengers were not injured. The driver of the Ford F-150, a 33-year-old Milford man, and a passenger also escaped injury.

Troopers report signs of impairment

Responding troopers made contact with Morales-Ortiz following the crash and reported observing multiple signs of impairment.

Police said Morales-Ortiz suffered serious injuries and was flown to an area hospital by the Delaware State Police Aviation Section.

During a search of the Jeep, troopers located multiple open containers of alcohol. Investigators also discovered that Morales-Ortiz’s driver’s license was suspended at the time of the crashes.

State police subsequently obtained and executed a search warrant to collect a blood sample from Morales-Ortiz while he was hospitalized.

The investigation remains ongoing.
