Teen charged in deadly Sayreville shooting of 17-year-old

SAYREVILLE, N.J. – A 16-year-old boy has been taken into custody and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old in the Parlin section of Sayreville late Thursday night, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera and Sayreville Police Chief Daniel Plumacker.

Authorities said the juvenile was charged with acts of delinquency that, if committed by an adult, would amount to murder, possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a handgun, and armed riot.

Police responded to Woods Edge Court at 10:58 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting gunfire. When officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old male from East Brunswick suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation led by Detective Mark Nairooz of the Sayreville Police Department and Detective Ryan Kirsh of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office identified the 16-year-old Sayreville resident as a suspect. Officials said the victim and suspect knew each other before the shooting, confirming it was not a random act of violence.

The juvenile is being held at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center pending a preliminary hearing before a Family Court judge.

Investigators have not disclosed a possible motive as the case remains active. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Nairooz at 732-727-4444 or Detective Kirsh at 732-745-3711.
