Teen crashes e-bike in Virginia as sheriff warns riders after back-to-back accidents

One Stafford County crash involved a 14-year-old while another ended with a DUI charge for an e-bike rider

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — Stafford County deputies are warning residents about e-bike safety after responding to two separate crashes involving riders over the weekend, including one that resulted in a DUI charge.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded Friday to an auto accident involving a 14-year-old riding an e-bike.

After reviewing the circumstances of the crash, authorities determined the driver likely did not see the teen approaching.

Officials said no injuries were reported in the collision.

A second e-bike crash happened Saturday and resulted in a DUI charge against the rider, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities did not release additional details about the second crash or identify the rider involved.

Following the incidents, the sheriff’s office urged residents to understand the differences between the three classes of e-bikes before purchasing or operating one.

Officials noted that e-bikes vary in speed, capabilities and legal requirements depending on their classification.

The sheriff’s office also reminded riders not to drink and drive.
