TRENTON, N.J. — A Code Blue Alert has been declared in Trenton as temperatures are forecasted to dip below freezing, posing a heightened risk to vulnerable populations. The alert, issued by Mayor W. Reed Gusciora, will remain in effect from Tuesday through Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to drop below 30 degrees Fahrenheit during this period. In response, the City of Trenton has arranged for a warming shelter at the Sam Naples Senior Center on Chestnut Avenue, which will operate from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday. The city will also provide transportation and light refreshments to those utilizing the shelter.
“During these frigid temperatures, it is critical we come together to ensure the most vulnerable in our community are safe and cared for,” said Mayor Gusciora in a statement.
In addition to the city-run shelter, the Rescue Mission of Trenton on Ewing Street has been designated as a Code Blue shelter for Mercer County. Unlike its usual hours, the facility will remain open 24 hours a day during the alert. Residents in need of assistance are encouraged to contact the Rescue Mission directly or dial 211 for family shelter services.
Trenton officials are urging residents to report any unsheltered individuals experiencing homelessness to the Trenton Police Department.
