WASHINGTON — President Trump directed White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles to investigate a series of unexplained drone sightings over New Jersey, including reports of drones flying near his Bedminster residence in November and December. The directive came during Trump’s first press gaggle in the Oval Office, where he addressed questions about the incidents.
“I’d like to find out what it is and tell the people,” Trump said to reporters on Monday. Turning to Wiles, who was standing off-camera, he added, “Can we find out what that was Susie…Why don’t we find out immediately?”
Reports of the drones prompted widespread speculation late last year as sightings were described in various areas across the state, but no official explanation was provided. Trump acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the issue, offering his own theories, though he emphasized the need for clarity.
“I can’t imagine it was an enemy—people would have gotten blown up,” the president speculated, adding, “Maybe they were testing things. I don’t know why they wouldn’t have said what it was.”
The president highlighted that drones were reportedly spotted near his Bedminster golf club, where he frequently spends time. He stopped short of linking the sightings to any specific agency or group but expressed urgency in addressing the matter.
As of now, no federal or state agency has taken responsibility for the drone activity, and details about their origin or purpose remain unclear. Wiles is expected to coordinate efforts to investigate the sightings and provide answers.
