Two Arrested After Teaneck Police Disrupt Suspected Honda Parts Theft Spree

Police say officers arrested an Englewood man and a juvenile after recovering stolen vehicle components, wallets, credit cards, cash, and other property during an early morning search in Teaneck.

Two suspects were arrested early Thursday after Teaneck police responded to reports of masked individuals walking through a residential neighborhood and allegedly stealing parts from Honda vehicles, authorities said.

Teaneck patrol officers were dispatched to the Cooper Avenue area at approximately 4:15 a.m. after a resident reported seeing two males dressed in black clothing and wearing masks, according to Deputy Chief Seth Kriegel.

Sgt. Mathew Carratura arrived and spotted two individuals matching the description near a parked Honda. Kriegel said both suspects fled in opposite directions after noticing the marked patrol vehicle.

Officers capture suspects after foot pursuit

Carratura apprehended a 17-year-old juvenile following a brief foot pursuit into a wooded area, police said.

Additional officers established a perimeter while the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit and the Englewood Police Department assisted in searching for the second suspect.

Authorities said the second suspect, Derise Martinez, 18, of Englewood, was located hiding behind a home on Lorraine Avenue and was taken into custody without incident.

Police recover stolen vehicle components

Investigators said officers recovered multiple vehicle sensor modules that had been removed from Honda vehicles in the area.

According to police, the sensor modules are used in advanced safety and driver-assistance systems, including collision avoidance technology and adaptive cruise control.

Officers also recovered wallets, identification cards, credit cards belonging to Teaneck residents, cash, headphones, gloves, masks, and an open knife that investigators believe was connected to the alleged crimes.

The juvenile’s identity was not released because of age. The investigation remains ongoing.
