HAVERSTRAW, NY – Darius Williams, a 34-year-old resident of Spring Valley, New York, was convicted after a four-day jury trial for Assault in the 2nd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree in an incident that occurred in the Village of Haverstraw.
Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh announced the verdict.
The incident took place on July 12, 2022, at approximately 6:08 pm, when Williams slashed a Haverstraw resident’s face with what appeared to be a box cutter. The victim was walking with his wife on Broadway in the Village of Haverstraw when the defendant approached them. Without any provocation, Williams swung at the victim in a downward motion, causing a deep cut to the left side of the victim’s face near his temple. Following the attack, Williams calmly walked away from the scene. The victim and the defendant had no prior relationship, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
The Haverstraw Police Department, with the assistance of the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, conducted a thorough investigation into the case.
Senior Assistant District Attorney Nicole Garcia led the prosecution.
Williams is scheduled for sentencing on September 6, 2023, where he faces a maximum sentence of up to 7 years in state prison for each count.
