Police Suspect Arson in Fire That Injured Multiple Firefighters in North Jersey

WEST NEW YORK, NJ – A fire that broke out in West New York on November 23, 2023, is currently under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force, North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, and the West New York Police Department. Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez provided details of the incident.

The fire, reported at approximately 5:30 p.m. at 5222 Bergenline Avenue, resulted in heavy smoke and flames engulfing the building. In the course of firefighting efforts, ten firefighters were injured, with two sustaining serious injuries. One firefighter remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Additionally, four civilians were treated for minor injuries and subsequently released. The fire was successfully brought under control just before 8:30 p.m.

The preliminary investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force indicates that the fire started in an apartment bedroom. While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, foul play is not currently suspected.
