Fatal Crash at Weigh Station on I-295 Claims Life of Hyattsville Man

by Charlie Dwyer

WASHINGTON, DC – The Metropolitan Police Department has identified Michael Scott Hamlin, 54, of Hyattsville, as the victim of a fatal incident near a weigh station on I-295 last week.

The event unfolded early Wednesday, January 3, when detectives were called to a single vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of I-295 at the weigh station. The initial crash led to a second accident involving Hamlin. Both drivers had exited their vehicles and were waiting near the weigh station for assistance.

During the investigation by DC Fire and EMS, which involved partial lane closures, a third vehicle, attempting to bypass the scene via the weigh station, struck Hamlin’s car, then Hamlin himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries. The driver responsible fled on foot.
