D.C. Carjacker Arrested on Multiple Charges

by Breaking Local News Report

WASHINGTON, D.C.A local man faces pretrial detention following his involvement in violent incidents at a gas station in Northeast Washington, D.C.

Michael Alan Hines, 36, of Washington, D.C., has been ordered detained pending trial for armed robbery and carjacking, following a determination of probable cause by the Honorable Heide Hermann. The charges stem from two separate incidents at a gas station on Rhode Island Avenue, as detailed by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela A. Smith.

In the first incident on March 27, 2024, Hines attempted to carjack a woman as she was refueling her vehicle. After failing to gain access to the locked car, he forcibly entered the vehicle once the doors automatically unlocked, assaulted the victim, and attempted to flee with her car and phone. The victim managed to escape, and Hines abandoned the carjacking attempt.

A subsequent police investigation linked Hines to another robbery at the same location days earlier, where he threatened a different victim with a knife over a dispute involving a debit card.

These incidents highlight the dangers faced by residents in seemingly safe environments and underscore the diligent work of the Metropolitan Police Department in identifying and apprehending suspects involved in violent crimes. The case is now moving forward with the prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacqueline Yarbro of the Major Crimes Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
