NEW HAVEN, CT — Dash cam footage released by New Haven Police has sparked controversy after showing a police cruiser abruptly cutting off an ATV rider. The incident occurred after police responded to reports of ATV and dirt bike riders at East Rock Park.
Police said the officer moved to protect a nearby family from the reckless driving of the ATV driver, who was driving the vehicle illegally in the park.
In the footage, a police cruiser is seen maneuvering in front of an ATV, causing the rider to crash into the vehicle. The collision resulted in serious injuries to the ATV rider, who was subsequently hospitalized.
Following backlash on social media, the New Haven Police defended the officer’s actions. Their statement explained that the cruiser was slowed and angled to protect nearby families and pedestrians, offering a pathway for the ATV to pass. However, they claim the rider lost control and collided with the cruiser due to his high rate of speed.
Motorized vehicles are not allowed on pedestrian paths.
“Motor vehicles are not allowed in College Woods. Trails are for pedestrian use only,” the city says on its website regarding the park.
