New Jersey Assembly Committee Approves Traffic Safety Commission Bill
TRENTON, NJ — The Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee has favorably reported Assembly Bill No. 1476, aimed at establishing the “New Jersey Target Zero Commission.” The proposed commission will include 13 members and is tasked with enhancing traffic safety across the state. Its ambitious goal is to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2040.
The commission’s responsibilities include developing a comprehensive action plan focused on engineering, education, and enforcement. This plan will address traffic safety from an equitable treatment perspective for all transportation users. The commission is set to adopt this action plan by the first day of the twelfth month following the bill’s effective date, and will host a public hearing to gather feedback, which must be announced on its website 72 hours prior.
Additionally, the commission will engage in promoting data transparency, improving road safety, and offering guidance on road and transportation planning. It aims to support local governments in developing their safety plans and will report its progress annually to the Governor and the Legislature. The bill, prefiled for the 2024-2025 session, includes amendments necessary from its technical review.
