Suspect Arraigned on Multiple Charges in Fatal NYPD Shooting

Queens, NY – Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Guy Rivera faced arraignment Tuesday on charges related to the fatal shooting of NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller and attempted murder of an NYPD sergeant in Far Rockaway last March. Rivera and codefendant Lindy Jones were also indicted on weapon charges. Rivera, 34, potentially faces life in prison if convicted and remains in custody pending his next court appearance in July.

His accomplice, Lindy Jones, 41, was arraigned earlier this month for weapon possession charges and faces a potential 30-year sentence. According to court documents, witnesses saw Rivera with a gun in Far Rockaway on the day of the incident.

The fatal encounter occurred when Rivera shot Detective Diller, who later succumbed to his injuries at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. A subsequent investigation led to the discovery of a loaded firearm in their vehicle. Prosecution of the case is being led by Assistant District Attorneys under the supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Shawn Clark.
