QUEENS, NY—Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced the indictment of Mohammad Bhuiyan, 48, of Woodside, for his involvement in a fatal traffic collision that occurred in November 2023. Bhuiyan was arraigned today on charges related to the incident that resulted in the death of a 59-year-old Astoria man.
The collision happened on Northern Boulevard when Bhuiyan, driving a cab, allegedly entered the roadway on the wrong side, striking the scooter rider head-on. The victim, who was delivering food at the time, sustained severe injuries that ultimately led to his death.
During the arraignment before Judge Ira Margulis, Bhuiyan faced charges including criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving, and failing to obey passing safety markers. The charges highlight the serious consequences of traffic violations and the importance of adhering to road safety laws.
District Attorney Katz emphasized the responsibility of drivers to ensure the safety of others on the road, stating, “A vehicle is capable of inflicting drastic damage and my office will continue to ensure that drivers who break the law are held responsible in this borough.” She also extended her condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, acknowledging the profound impact of the loss.
If convicted, Bhuiyan faces a potential sentence ranging from one and-a-third years to four years in prison, reflecting the severity of the charges against him. The case continues to underscore the legal obligations of drivers to operate their vehicles safely and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to prosecute those who fail to comply.
