NEW CASTLE, DE — A tragic incident involving an electric scooter resulted in the death of a man last night in New Castle. The Delaware State Police are currently investigating the crash that occurred on May 26, 2024, at approximately 8:46 p.m.
The accident took place at the intersection of New Castle Avenue and Memorial Drive. A 2015 Honda Accord, driven by a 50-year-old Wilmington woman, was making a left turn from New Castle Avenue onto Memorial Drive when it collided with a Tifgalop K-8 electric scooter traveling southbound. The area was poorly lit at the time, and the scooter was reportedly equipped with insufficient lighting, making it difficult for the Honda driver to see the approaching scooter.
The scooter’s operator, who was not wearing a safety helmet or reflective clothing, suffered fatal injuries from the collision. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the Honda was also taken to the hospital for evaluation following the incident. The roadway was closed for about three hours to allow for an investigation and clearing of the scene. Further details will be provided as the investigation continues.
