Monessen Teen Sentenced in Shooting Death of Friend

Greensburg, PA — Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole W. Ziccarelli announced the sentencing of Terry Newton, 17, of Monessen, for the shooting death of his friend, Amari Altomore, 16.

Newton was sentenced by Common Pleas Judge Scott Mears to serve 8 to 25 years in prison, followed by a year of supervised release. For voluntary manslaughter, he received 7.5 to 20 years, with an additional six months for possession of a firearm by a minor. Newton pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in April.

The incident occurred in November 2022, in a bedroom of Newton’s home on South 14th Street in Monessen. After the shooting, Newton fled the scene and was not located by law enforcement for several weeks. The firearm used in the incident was never recovered.

In addition to his prison sentence, Newton was ordered to pay restitution.
