A 33-year-old Alexandria man was arrested early Tuesday morning after allegedly breaking into a retail store in Woodbridge and being found with suspected illegal drugs, according to police.

Officers responded at approximately 3:25 a.m. to the Ross store located at 13957 Richmond Highway following an alarm activation. When they arrived, they discovered that the front door of the business had been shattered.

According to the Prince William County Police Department, the suspect, later identified as Anthony Lee Hayes, was still inside the store when officers arrived. Upon seeing the officers outside, Hayes exited the store and was detained without incident.

During the arrest, officers discovered Hayes was in possession of a substance believed to be a Schedule I or II controlled drug. Police reported that no property was stolen during the burglary.

Charges and custody status

Hayes, whose listed residence is in Alexandria on Harrison Lane, was taken into custody and charged with burglary and possession of a Schedule I/II drug. He is being held without bond. A court date has not yet been scheduled.

The investigation into the incident remains active, though police indicated there was no sign of additional suspects or evidence of further damage or theft inside the business.

There were no reported injuries during the incident, and Ross employees were not present at the time of the break-in.
