PHILADELPHIA, PA — A man was shot and killed early Monday after allegedly forcing his way into his estranged wife’s home in Northeast Philadelphia, police said.
Officers from the 15th District responded to a call for a “person with a gun” around 12:27 a.m. on the 4400 block of Cottman Avenue. When officers arrived, they were met by a woman who said her 38-year-old husband, who had left the residence about a week earlier, had returned and forced his way into the house.
According to police, the man kicked in both the front and back doors before entering the home. Once inside, he allegedly began threatening the woman. In response, she retrieved a handgun and shot him once in the upper right shoulder.
Medics from Unit 17 arrived shortly after and pronounced the man dead at 12:36 a.m. The name of the deceased has not been released, pending family notification.
The firearm used was recovered at the scene, and police are working to determine whether it was legally owned and registered by the woman.
Homicide Unit handling investigation
The incident is currently under investigation by the Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit. Detectives are interviewing the woman involved and collecting evidence from the residence.
No arrests have been made as of Monday, and police have not confirmed whether the woman will face any charges. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and will include a review by the District Attorney’s Office.
Police said there were no other individuals inside the home at the time of the shooting and no additional injuries were reported.
The case remains open as detectives continue to assess the circumstances surrounding the forced entry and shooting.
