Fentanyl exposure death leads to manslaughter charges in Brooklyn
BROOKLYN, NY — Two parents have been indicted on manslaughter charges following the death of their four-year-old son who was exposed to fentanyl inside a Brooklyn family shelter, prosecutors said.
Yitzchok Sklar, 33, and Miriam Elkayam, 27, were arraigned on charges including second-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Authorities said the child, Aron Sklar, was found unresponsive on March 4, 2025, inside a family shelter on Glenwood Road in East Flatbush.
Emergency responders administered Narcan and rushed the boy to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators determined the cause of death was fentanyl exposure.
According to prosecutors, suspected fentanyl, other narcotics, and drug paraphernalia were recovered from the residence.
The indictment upgrades earlier charges and holds both parents accountable in connection with the child’s death.
Sklar was remanded without bail, while Elkayam was held on $500,000 cash bail or $1 million bond.
Both are scheduled to return to court on May 1.
