Police identify 29-year-old Shanell Holiday after deadly Northwest DC crash

WASHINGTON, DC – A 29-year-old DC woman was killed while crossing New York Avenue Sunday evening when a blue Subaru struck her in the middle of the intersection and sped away, leaving police searching for the car in a fatal Northwest DC hit-and-run.

The Metropolitan Police Department identified the woman as Shanell Holiday of Southeast DC.

The collision occurred at approximately 6:48 p.m. Sunday at North Capitol Street and New York Avenue NW.

Woman was crossing New York Avenue

MPD’s preliminary investigation found that Holiday was walking north in the west crosswalk at the intersection.

While she was in the middle of the intersection, the traffic signal turned green for westbound vehicles, according to police.

Holiday continued crossing New York Avenue when she was struck by a blue 2011 Subaru Legacy.

Police said the driver fled the scene.

Shanell Holiday pronounced dead

Third District officers responding to the crash found Holiday suffering from serious injuries.

DC Fire and EMS personnel arrived and determined she showed no signs of life. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

MPD’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is handling the investigation.

Blue Subaru sought in fatal hit-and-run

Police identified the striking vehicle as a blue 2011 Subaru Legacy but did not release information about the driver in Tuesday’s announcement.

No arrest was reported.
