Coastal flood advisory issued for Jersey Shore as deep freeze grips region

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for much of the Jersey Shore as cold temperatures and lingering ice threaten to worsen tidal flooding along low-lying coastal areas Sunday morning.

The advisory, in effect from 5 a.m. to noon Sunday, covers Atlantic, Cape May, Coastal Atlantic, Atlantic Coastal Cape May, and Southeastern Burlington Counties. Forecasters expect up to one foot of inundation above ground level in flood-prone areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

Officials warn that flooding could impact the most vulnerable roads in bayside and inland coastal communities, leading to partial or full closures during the morning high tide. The National Weather Service said minor coastal flooding may persist through Monday, with the greatest impacts expected during Sunday’s high tide cycle.

Ice buildup on the back bays could be pushed onshore during high tide, and forecasters caution that freezing floodwaters may create dangerous icy road conditions. Drivers are urged not to attempt to pass through flooded or ice-covered roadways.

  • Coastal Flood Advisory in effect Sunday from 5 a.m. to noon for Atlantic and Cape May counties.
  • Up to one foot of tidal inundation expected in low-lying and bayside areas.
  • Ice pushed inland during high tide could worsen flooding and freeze on roadways.

Residents are advised to move vehicles from flood-prone streets, monitor local tide gauges, and check updates from the National Water Prediction Service at water.noaa.gov/wfo/phi.
